Reproduction of spark trap made of metal and wood with loading and firing simulator mechanism.

The spark gaps were usually very short, with cannon lengths of less than 60 cm, at a time when a musket barrel measured more than 90 cm. The firing mechanism was based on a flint or flintlock that, when the hammer was operated, produced the spark that ignited the gunpowder.

This trombone, used in the 18th century as a predecessor to the rifle, was very inaccurate, so it was useful for boarding during naval battles where combat was at close range. Furthermore, these weapons were used for a single shot, as the loading method was very slow and not used to have time to reload. Therefore, the fighters after firing were forced to draw their swords or epees or use it as a blackjack, as the circumstances did not allow them to reload in time.

Did you know that the musketeer Phortos uses a rifle in the 2011 film The Three Musketeers?
